Welcome to the website of
North East Wales Referees’ Association
The Association was reformed on 23rd February 1961 as the Wrexham & District Referees’ Association and changed its name after the formation of the North East Wales Football Association to reflect the fact that it was the only refereeing organisation that covered the NEWFA area. That is no longer the case following the extension of the NEWFA boundary in 2010 but the name has been retained due to the reputation that the Association enjoys throughout Wales and its bordering Counties.
The objectives of the Association were to encourage the recruitment of new referees and to offer an opportunity for education from colleagues there being no coaching of referees by a parent body at that time. Recruitment and training is now the responsibility of our parent Association but NEWRA still plays a big role in both areas.
For a small area we have been very successful and from 1961 have had members officiating at Football League level until that avenue was closed in 1992/3. Since the introduction of the Welsh Premier League the success has continued with us being represented on the Leagues panel of officials since its inception.
International recognition has not bypassed the Association either and our referees have officiated at UEFA or FIFA competitions in most years since 1961.
Currently we have 70 active members. Of those one is a FIFA and Welsh Premier League referee while a further 3 are Welsh Premier League referees whilst another 8 members are on the Assistant’s list of that League.
We have, for many years, donated to charity from various sponsored activities. In 2003 we embarked on what has become an annual Sportsman’s Evening. In 2012 a sponsored walk and a Race Night were added and in the last 13 years £34,350 has been raised for local charities.
This years adopted charity is the Shooting Star Appeal at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.
