Congratulations to Bryn Markham Jones on his appointment to referee the Welsh Cup Final at the Racecourse Ground, Wrexham on Monday, 2nd May between Airbus UK Broughton and The New Saints.

Bryn was brought up in Wrexham and started his his refereeing career in this area going through the Laws of the Game Course with NEWFA. His move to University and then to teach in the Swansea area led him to leave the Wrexham area but nevertheless he has maintained his membership of NEWRA.

We wish Bryn and his colleagues Eddie King, Martin Roberts and

Kevin Parry an enjoyable game.

On Saturday, 16th April the Guilsfield v Mold Alexandra Huws Gray Cymru Alliance was refereed by Martin Williams with his son Geraint and daughter Sian as his assistants.

Martin begs the question as to whether this has occurred before. Certainly it has with father and sons but has it with father, son and daughter?

If you know of this happening I am sure that Martin would love to hear from you, his email address is

It's that time of year when promotions are announced and again we have good news and congratulations go to -

TOM WILLIAMS - promoted to the full list of referees on the Welsh Premier League.

LEWYS EVANS, CHERYL FOSTER and ALEX LIVESEY who have all been promoted to the Referees List of the Cymru Alliance and the Assistant Referees List of the Welsh Premier League.

All promotions are subject to them passing the FAW Fitness Test!!!

We wish them all well for not just the season ahead but for all of their refereeing career.

A disappointing feature of the announcement from Cardiff is that Ashley Jones has come off the Talent List. Huge commiserations go to Ash but we know he has the ability and hope that he comes back stronger and forces himself into the promotion stakes again.

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Mr Keith Hale on Monday, 19th September.

Keith was a Vice President of the Association and a great friend of referees.

On his arrival in the Wrexham area some 45 years ago he quickly became involved in the local football scene and was one of the founders of the Wrexham Sunday Football League which became a huge success and at one time boasted 6 divisions, sadly times have changed and the League continues to exist with a handful of teams. In 1974 he became a council member of the North East Wales Football Association and became Chairman in 1994 before becoming a Life Vice President in 1999. Until recently Keith was still very active in local football circles

His passing will leave a void in all three organisations who will sorely miss him.

Prior to the Annual General Meeting on Monday 1st June a cheque for £600 was presented to Cath Humes representing the Shooting Star Unit at Wrexham Maelor Hospital by Chairman, Martyn Colloby.

The amount was the result of fund raising activities during the season.

In what is thought to be an unprecedented year North East Wales referees officiated at four of the five FA of Wales Cup Finals at the end of the season. In recognition of their achievement President, Cliff Evans, presented each with a memento on behalf of North East Wales RA.

Appointments were:

FAW Trophy - Nick Pratt (Referee) and

Lewys Evans (Assistant Referee)

Welsh Youth Cup - Ashley Jones (Referee) and

Tom Williams (4th Official)

Women's Cup  - Tomos Roberts (Referee)

Under 16 Girls Cup - Cheryl Foster (Referee) and Geraint Williams (Assistant Referee)

At the NEWFA Annual General Meeting on 8th July Cliff Evans and Arthur Pritchard, both Life Members of NEWRA,

were made Life Members of NEWFA in recognition of having served on the Council for 21 years.

Both are held in high regard throughout the Principality for their contribution to refereeing and administration.

In addition Cliff was elected as Chairman of NEWFA for the next 3 years.

Congratulations from all at NEWRA go to CHERYL FOSTER who has been appointed to the FIFA Women's Referees List for 2016. What wonderful news. We all wish Cheryl every success and we are sure that she will do herself credit.

The following is extracted from the FAW Website:

Cheryl Foster who is included on the Women’s International list of referees for the first time. Foster won 63 caps for the Wales International team and scored nine goals during her time as a player. Foster joins Charlotte Carpenter as the second FIFA Women’s referee from Wales.

On Monday, 3rd August we had our first meeting of the new season when Mark Whitby spoke on preparing

for the season and maintaining fitness.

Mark is the newly appointed FAW Referees’ Fitness Coach having retired from active refereeing at the conclusion of last season. Mark spoke enthusiastically about his subject for about an hour aided by a power point display.

Major points that came out of his address were:

Congratulations go to Tom Williams (Referee) and John Jones (4th Official) who officiated in the Wales v Greece Under 17 International at Bangor on Tuesday, 25th August 2015.

When I finished playing (Liverpool, Doncaster Belles, Wales) there was obviously a huge gap in my life in terms of participating in football. My journey to becoming a referee started with a simple question, Have you ever thought about refereeing?? I hadn’t, but I did then I did! And the more I thought about, the more I felt I could make a contribution and it would give me that chance to be get back on the pitch! But I didn’t think things would move so fast that I’d be a FIFA referee by my third season and it has been a steep learning curve and an amazing challenge.

Playing for Wales was always a huge honour for both myself and my family - so to reach international standard as a referee is just as special and I am very excited. I see it as representing my country just as I did as a player.

I have received so much support from the North East Wales Referee Association so I want to thank them for always believing that I could get to this point.

Congratulations to Dan Fogerty (Assistant Referee) and Alex Livesey (4th Official) on their appointments to officiate in the FAW Trophy Final between Abergavenny and Sully Sports which is to be played at Dragon Park, Newport on Saturday, 16th April. The Referee is Iwan Griffith from Conwy.

Our best wishes to all for an enjoyable game and a memorable experience.

The April Meeting took the form of our President conducting what was the third year he has undertaken this task for us. Following Lee Evans and Cheryl Foster it was the turn of Geraint Parry the Secretary of Wrexham Football Club who was in the spotlight.

Geraint explained that his love of the club started when he was a teenager and travelled in from Heswall by train to watch what has become his beloved club. With two others of similar age he soon became involved in the production of the club programme from compiling through to printing and selling it. He was too modest to say so but in that time they won several awards for the best programme in the Division. He was always around the club and when the club went into Administration he was asked to become the Secretary which, with some trepidation, he agreed to do.

It was a difficult time but other clubs were very helpful to him and he managed to fulfil his role. He then spoke of the loss of the Football League place, the Supporters Trust taking over the club, Wrexham's situation of being the oldest international ground, the various managers that he had worked under, the current position of taking a 99 year lease on the Racecourse Ground and the hope that Colliers Park would follow and his hopes for the future of the club. In addition to the questioning from Cliff, Geraint responded to several questions from members during the course of the evening.

A thoroughly good meeting with our thanks to both Geraint and Cliff.

Cheryl Foster makes her debut as a FIFA Referee when she is one of 3 referees to officiate in an Under 17 Girls Mini Tournament in the Bologna region of Italy from the 14th to 21st March involving Finland, Italy, Netherlands and Greece.

The other referees are from Germany and Ukraine. Travelling with Cheryl as an Assistant Referee is Laura Griffiths from the Caernarfon area. Our good wishes go to Cheryl for a successful and enjoyable tournament.

Blast from the past. World Cup Referee visits Wrexham

Chairman Sam Prytherch welcomed Football League and World Cup referee, Ken Dagnall of Bolton, when he addressed Wrexham Referees at their meeting in September, 1966. Less than two months earlier Ken was one of the pool of referees

who officiated in the World Cup which was won by England.

Ken refereed two games -

   15th July, 1966 - Hungary 3 Brazil 1 at Goodison Park

   28th July, 1966 - Portugal 2 Russia 1 at Wembley - play off for 3rd place.

He was then appointed to referee the FA Cup Final in 1967 when Tottenham Hotspur beat Chelsea 2-1.

Following his retirement in 1968 he suggested that a small group of, say, 15 referees should be used to officiate at the more important games.

Members have been honoured with appointments in three of the National Cup Semi Finals this season

which is a huge reflection on our members and North East Wales FA.

The Youth Cup at Newtown on Sunday, 15th March between Bala Town and Swansea City was manned by

James Walker Referee),Tom Owen and Ellis Hughes (Assistant Referees) and Tomos Roberts (4th Official).

The Trophy Semi Final on Wednesday, 18th March at Bangor City between Glantraeth and Penrhyndeudraeth was manned by Ashley Jones (Referee), David Wright and Ellis Hughes (Assistant Referees) and Tom Owen (4th Official).

Meanwhile appointments in the Welsh Cup Semi Final to be played at Cefn Druids on Saturday, 4th April between

Rhyl and Newtown are Nick Pratt (Referee), Phil Roszkowski and Martin Williams (Assistant Referees)

with Ryan Stewart of Cardiff as 4th Official.

Our congratulations  to all.

To organise our 13th Annual Sports Persons Evening for Friday, 13th March may have been pushing our luck a little but then then to find that there was a counter attraction in Wrexham on the same evening and to have your principal speaker ring at lunch time on the day to say that he had a serious family illness, was still coming but his arrival time and departure may be different to those planned, well the adrenalin starts to flow.

However difficult it was for him Steve Kindon turned up on time and was the ultimate professional while the whole evening was yet another success. Steve showed why he is the No 1 speaker on the after dinner circuit and Lester Crabtree was a superb follow up to him. Added to that the meal was possibly the best we have had in the 13 years.

Although figures are not yet known it all results in a decent cheque to be presented to the Shooting Star Unit in Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

It turned out that Steve Kindon's problem related to his 32 year old daughter who had suffered a stroke and was in hospital where she is still. Nathan Brearley continues to be in contact with Steve to check on his daughters progress. This is an extension to the excellent job which Nathan did as MC on the night.

Our thanks to all who supported us.

14/5/15 - Fantastic Promotion News!

Huge congratulations to Ashley Jones, John Jones and Tomos Roberts.

ASHLEY has been promoted to the Talent Group of referees on the Welsh Premier League  for next season. This means that he will referee some games in the Welsh Premier League and Cymru Alliance whilst doing some games as an Assistant Referee on the Welsh Premier League.

JOHN and TOMOS have been promoted to the Referees List of the Cymru Alliance and the Assistant Referees List of the Welsh Premier League.

This is a huge opportunity for all three and we wish them every success in their new roles.

NEWRA Awards

At the Annual General Meeting of the Association held on Monday, 2nd June the following awards were presented -

Newcomer of the Season - Ryan Hughes

Assistant Referee of the Season - David Wright

Referee of the Season - John Jones

Congratulations go to all three on receiving the awards for their outstanding work during the season.

Cheque for Maelor Special Care Baby Unit

Debbie Cope of the Special Care Baby Unit at Wrexham Maelor Hospital receives a cheque for £3150 from members Tomos Roberts, Neale Atkinson (Vice Chairman), Ryan Hughes, Sion Davies and Martyn Colloby (Chairman).

This was the result of charity fund raising events organised by members.

Huge congratulations go to TOM WILLIAMS, ELLIS HUGHES,

TOM OWEN and DAVID WRIGHT on their promotions for next season.

TOM WILLIAMS has been promoted to the List of Referees for the Welsh

Premier League which means that he will referee both at that level

and Cymru Alliance next season.

Ellis, Tom Owen and David have been promoted to the Referees List of the the Cymru Alliance and the Assistant Referees' List of the Welsh Premier League.

This is a great opportunity for all 4 of them and reflects the huge strides they

have made in a very short time from youth football.

All four of them plus last years three promotions are products of the Regional Development Group. The scheme obviously takes credit for since it's inception

the Regional Officer, Gerald Davies, has had two groups through and to get

such a high percentage promoted speaks volumes for him, for NEWFA,

it's Referees' Committee and Referees' Officer, Dave Fawkes, who

are responsible for the initial recruitment and training.

Congratulations to John Jones who was part of a 3 man team that went to Dublin on Friday, 8th May to officiate the Bohemian v Limerick match in the SSE Airtricity League at Dalymount Park. The team was Ryan Stewart (SWFA - Referee), Martin Roberts (NWCFA - Assistant) and John.

Following the AGM members decided to change the base for the Association. Consequently all future meetings, unless otherwise notified, will be in the Lounge at BRYMBO SPORTS COMPLEX.

On Monday, 7th March we had the privilege of having Ray Ellingham the FAW Referees Manager as our speaker.

Ray had come from a FIFA meeting at the week end where changes to the Laws of the Game for next season had been agreed and shared those with us using video clips as an aid. This followed on from a brief session on teamwork.

We are grateful to Ray for sharing the information with us and certainly, initially, there is going to be more confusion and disagreement of referees decisions particularly when a free kick for offside is given in the opposite half of the pitch!!

The February Meeting took the form of a Panel with three of our members who had attained promotion at the start of the season forming the panel, Tom Williams (talent List), Ellis Hughes and David Wright (Welsh Premier League Assistants and Huws Gray Alliance referees).

All of them performed with credit in answering questions about the differences they had experienced so far in becoming the Referee as opposed to the Assistant. Areas covered included relationship with managers, players, secretaries, etc. and the impact of Live TV games.

The picture shows the panel in action, from left Ellis Hughes, Martyn Colloby (Chairman), Tom Williams and David Wright.

The next meeting will be held at Brymbo Sports Complex on Monday, 7th March commencing at 7.45p.m.

The speaker on this occasion will be Ray Ellingham the FAW National Referees Manager. Ray was a Welsh Premier League and FIFA referee and in addition to his duties with FAW he is also a UEFA Match Delegate.

This is a great opportunity to hear somebody of such experience and one you shouldn't miss.

Congratulations to two of our members Nick Pratt and Bryn Markham Jones who have been appointed as Additional Assistant Referees for the Groningen v Braga match on Thursday, 10th December.

The team is Referee:  Lee Evans

Assistant Referee 1: Philip Thomas

Assistant Referee 2: John Bryn Roberts

Additional Assistant Referee 1: Bryn Markham-Jones

Additional Assistant Referee 2: Nick Pratt

For our meeting on 11th January we were delighted to have MIKE JONES (Elite List Referee) as our speaker. Two nights later he would be refereeing the Liverpool v Arsenal game.

Mike opened up with some information about himself starting at 15 in Chester football and as this part of the evening unfolded it turned into a question and answer session. For the second part of the evening he did some coaching on handling Mass Confrontations.

Mike's input to the meeting was well received by members in what was an enjoyable and educational evening.

The Annual Dinner will be held on Friday, 11th March at Padeswood & Buckley Golf Club when the  Speaker will be Steve Daley formerly of Manchester City and Wolves supported by Comedian Bill Woolland. A three course meal completes the bill. Tickets are available from Brian Roberts (01978362477) at a cost of £25 each.

Bryn Markham Jones and Nick Pratt have both been appointed as additional assistant referees for the European Nation Groups match between Luxembourg and Macedonia on Saturday, 5th September.

The remainder of the 6 man team is Lee Evans (Referee), Phil Thomas and Eddie King (Assistant Referees)

and Daniel Beckett (4th Official).

We extend our congratulations and best wishes for a successful trip to all.

Please note that the January meeting has been changed to 11th January with a 7.30p.m. start but still at Brymbo.

We are pleased to announce that on this date our Guest Speaker will be Elite List Referee, Mike Jones from Chester.

Another UEFA Appointment

Congratulations go to Cheryl Foster who has been appointed as 4th Official in 3 matches forming part of a 4 team mini tournament. This is a Ladies Under 19 competition involving Belgium, Croatia, Azerbaijan and Wales and the games will all be played at Airbus or The New Saints.

Whilst doing his FAW fitness test in Newport on Saturday, 24th July Tomos' knee collapsed under him.

He was ambulanced to the Royal Gwent Hospital where his knee was put in a brace and he was instructed to see his GP on the following Monday morning. Since then events have taken several turns and he is now being looked after by FAW.

The status has gone from cartilage to cruciate ligament damage and back to cartilage. He is due for an MRI scan in the next few days with an operation to follow. The anticipated best outcome is that he will be out for 3 months.

We wish Tomos well for a speedy recovery.

About a month ago James' son Noah, aged 2, was diagnosed with a rare disease called Arnold-Chiari malformation.

This is disease where hind brain fluids leak into the spinal cord and he has since had an operation. However Noah's brother Joseph, aged 7, was diagnosed with the same disease and he has now had 15 operations in his short life.

Following is a link to an article in the Daily Post which covers an interview with James wife, Faye. This must be distressing for Faye, James and the boys and we extend our good wishes to them.

Ashley Jones has been appointed as one of a team to officiate at a mini UEFA tournament in Newport,

Gwent from 21st to 28th October.

Countries involved are Wales, Albania, Netherlands and Switzerland. Ashley will be operating as 4th Official in a team of European officials and there will be a UEFA Observer present at all games. This is a great opportunity for Ashley to work with officials from another country and should be a good learning experience.

Our best wishes go to Ashley for a successful week.

The next Laws of the Game Course to be run under the auspices of the North East Wales FA will commence on Thursday, 10th September at Brymbo Sports Complex with a 7.30pm start.
